Earl, I've done a lot of flying, but had never used US Air until a year ago when they were my only option for a last-minute, middle of the night emergency for which I had to get to GA immediately. The last-minute return flights were also on US Air during the holidays and US Air again was my only option. No safety problems at all on those flights.

My son also used them many, many times for flights over the period of about a year to get around the country for work, and to my knowledge there was never a safety issue. Yes, delays due to weather or delayed landing at the destination airport, like every airline, but none about safety issues to my knowledge.

I live near one of their hub cities, so for me it's usually the only game in town. So far so good...

Earl-
I work in a responsible position at another major airline, and can pretty much assure you that any of the top ten carriers (USAirways included) are safe. The FAA is breathing down all of our backs so heavily right now that safety is of more concern than it's ever been--rightfully so. You will be fine on them. They are terrible service-wise, but safe nonetheless.

Service wise they are a disaster..don't think I ever took off or landed on time when flying them.

This is an old joke..but a fearful passenger was told, don't worry, you won't go until it's your time to go. The passenger replied, yeah, but I don't wnat to be on this plane when it's someone else's time to go.

Ewwwww...you're right. I agree with DCGNA, US Air has a bad record for delays in take-off and landing times, but they can't be blamed for this one. A passenger on the flight brought the rotting meat on board and put it in the overhead bin. Yikes.

In their defense, a ton of their overall delays are due to air traffic control delays at two of their largest cities-- Philadelphia being the worst, and NYC Laguardia being another place where they are plagued with delays--delays in Philly especially seem to just snowball for them. Phily is a bad city for any airline, but they have such a large presence there with so many flights that they kind of stick out like a sore thumb with the delays.

Location: have a nice day :-)
in the mid 1980s i was on this airline when the cabin door blew open at 33,000 feet. needless to say i was freaked out and also lost my filofax. my TAB soda spilled all over my coolots.

they offered to pay for dry cleaning but refused to reimburse me for my filofax.

then again in 1991, they lost my dooney & burke luggage set.

finally in 1992, one the flight attendants decided to paint her nails on a red eye flight to LA. the fumes set me into an asthma attack. haven't used the airline since.

Those cheapscapes!!! Someone said always complain to the airport, not the airline. Don't know how true that is.

Just wear a hat Earl - in case of the maggots, lol!Honestly, if you think about it, the chances of crashing are pretty remote

Does anyone know how much in US dollars it costs to fly from LA to Cleveland return on this airline? I could not care less about its safety record. I have a different philosophy but I would be annoyed if they lost my luggage though. I cannot seem to get this information from here(cost?)

Just remember, it WAS a US Air pilot who landed the plan on the Hudson.

earl25, I'm no frequent flyer, but my rule of thumb is NOT to fly any plane smaller than a 727 jet.

It's quite common for larger airlines to use smaller, regional carriers, and these can account for more accidents than the big airlines, due to old aircraft. If you're morbidly curious, you can compare the airline crash stats at: http://www.airsafe.com/airline.htm

Safe travels to you.

Sarah, check cheaptickets.com, they have great prices, I usually check the flights there, then I go buy it from the original airline to save $20 or something, LOL
