I have heard some guys say they would rather not approach a woman who looks like they have 'tons' of makeup on, no matter how good she looks. They say it's because if she needs that much makeup, she must be ugly or not so good looking. Or they think she will look very different w/o it, and they will be disappointed.
But I think makeup doesn't change a face dramatically. I mean, it can help a lot, of course, with disguising imperfect skin, and making eyes look wider with eye makeup, etc. But if makeup can make a plain or ugly woman beautiful, then every woman you see walking around with makeup would be considered a beauty, and that is not the case. At least in NYC, I see the vast majority of women wear makeup to some extent. Even those who look 'natural', can have 'natural' looking makeup, that looks like they have nothing or not much on, but they do. Even celebs have that 'natural' looking makeup at times.

But we also know women who are not that attractive, and despite makeup, still don't look so good. Some bone structures simply cannot be helped much no matter how well the makeup is done.

So what do you all think, does makeup make such a dramatic difference for you? I know it does help, but if it could make all women supermodels, then nobody would seek a nose job, cheek implants, etc. I know some will say they want to look good even w/o makeup, but I don't think even a professional makeup job can take a plain women into a ravishing beauty.
I think some men think makeup can work miracles. Photoshop can, since facial contours can be altered.
But makeup can only do so much, and people with a good eye can still see imperfections even with tons of makeup.

I think makeup CAN do wonders for rendering a plain gal into a stunning beauty. A while back, someone posted a shot of that Brazilian (?) model - buck teeth and all; hair done up in rollers, zero makeup on. Not attractive at all. But after she got the professional makeup job, she was (and still is) a stunning supermodel.

I'm not a guy, but have heard comments enough from many to come to the conclusion that a naturally youthful, feminine and not-overly made-up look is generally preferred. The real painted tarts may have a negative halo as being too "grasping" or somehow not trustworthy for many men. It's a subtle thing.

But ultimately, I think a guy would prefer a clean, youthful and healthy look. It should be emphasized that this total look goes beyond the face, tho! If one has a lovely face but aged, out-of-shape body, I don't think a guy would find her as attractive as someone with a plain face but a healthy, toned, and strong body.

Granted, these views are tainted by my being with ONE guy for 36 years, but the topic does come up with other friends and relatives. So much so, that I honestly think that a lifetime FITNESS program instills far more "beauty" than all the money in the world spent on cosmetics or plastic surgery. Fitness takes time, sacrifice, commitment and discipline. That - to me - can speak volumes about a person's general character and inner strength.

As a heterosexual male I find it unattractive when women cake makeup on their faces even if they have good facial features. When girls cake makeup on their faces they often look like prostitutes or transexuals to me, as these are two types of people that often wear extreme amounts of make-up. Its just a turn-off.

If you ask me...make-up should only be used to cover up things like acne, scars, and dark circles, which is all I ever use it for.

You can decide for yourself, in the case of celebs...

This has been discussed before, but the plainest faces can be painted to look incredible. They present a blank canvas. That being said, I think a str8 guy wants the natural beauty because he thinks he has the best chance of improving his DNA strain through her. In the Middle Ages women could be fined if they were trying too hard to dolly up, like hiding a missing leg or baldness. Cosmetics were considered a form of witchcraft, which in a way they are.

Bugjune, it's interesting what you say about the body. I agree, that a fit body is better. But I think when women are 'young', and young men are looking at them, they tend to prefer a pretty face or 'pleasing' face, over the 'best' body. Of course most don't want a chubby or out of shape woman, but I've heard many times how a certain girl has an awesome body - But her face..so they call her buttaface.
These are the type of girls some guys say they would be for fun (some joke with a bag over her face) but not for a long term partner.
Also, there's all types of tastes in 'body' types, some like voluptuous women, some rail thin, etc. I think when a women is young, as long as she doesn't look fat or obese to men, and has a nice face they find pleasing, it's enough.
An older woman is different, so she has to work on both her body and face. I know we can only look so young, even with the best p.s. But you have to admit most of us (at least those here on this forum) want our faces to look as best we can, or we wouldn't be getting or considering p.s. or fillers, chemical, laser peels, etc.

There's a difference between being an overly painted face, and a nicely done makeup job that just 'accentuates' features.
There's some women who are plain and can look great with makeup done well. But some with not so good bone structures, will not look pretty no matter how good the makeup. Tori Spelling comes to mind, and a few others.

But sometimes you may 'think' the woman didn't cake on makeup and has 'minimal' makeup on, but it can actually be a lot of makeup, done strategically to look 'natural'.
There's so many cosmetic products now that hide blemishes and can look almost natural to the naked eye, if they are done well. Maybe some people can tell up close ( I can sometimes) but most guys can't usually, esp. in dark places.

If you look at this Asian girl for example, in the link below, you can see how she has used alot of makeup on her face to cover blemishes and even up her skin tone. Also she looked like she created an eyelid with makeup or maybe eyelid 'tape' that is commonly used, and can look natural.
I don't think she was ugly in no makeup pic, but she looked very plain. In the after, she looks 'cute' to me, but not 'overly' done, no bright colors and it would 'seem' like she has almost flawless skin, which makes a face look prettier, even if the bone structure isn't the best.
I don't think she looks beautiful with the makeup either, but a lot better, and it doesn't 'look' like a ton.
I don't think she has a nice bone structure, too roundish but some people like that.

I agree. Many high fashion models are in fact plain faces. But there's a difference between plain and ugly or homely.
I don't think a huge nose or lack of chin, or otherwise homely face can be made beautiful with makeup.
I do think too much makeup can deceive men in a way. But I don't think all men are easily deceived. I mean, I see many women in clubs/bars in the city, all with makeup, and not all are considered hot by men. Many guys can see through makeup and know which women are prettier than others.

I love makeup. I love the process of putting it on. I feel more powerful with make up than without. My husband has said I look better without makeup but I think that is just something men associate with the times they see you without makeup.
I don't like makeup on my skin exept a tiny bit of blush but I love eye makeup. I think the biggest mistake at any age is thick foundation. I love lipstick but wish I could find one that really lasts with a good texture and color. Anyone know about lip stain? I've been wanting to try this but they all seem to be horrible colors.
I'm also getting to the point where when I see a guy with a bit of makeup on it can look really good. Young guys with a touch of eyeliner for example. Why should women have all the fun.

Sam....a lipstick that you might want to try:

Revlon Colorstay lasts all day...really works.L'Oreal makes a good one too but doesn't last quite as long.

Have you tried the Benetint, Stila or Tarte lip/cheek stains? They all come in a variety of colors (the Benetint/Posietint are both very soft and sheer) last forever and just need a nice gloss on top.

Personally I love makeup and am never seen without it. I even got all done up this morning going into the hospital for blood work and other tests even though I feel like crap. No one sees me without makeup.

Thanks Stache! I have been sick for over a month now and spent last night in the ER and went back to the hospital this morning for blood work and an x-ray. Hopefully they will figure out what is wrong soon. Not the best way to spend one's vacation though :/

I think a little makeup, applied well, can go a long way. But badly or heavily applied makeup looks worse than no makeup.
I always feel better about myself with some makeup. I have very pale skin, and I need concealer in places that look red and blotchly, like those creases beside my nostrils.

I don't wear makeup really. I just am bad at applying it.

But I read that: the more features stand out from one another (and from hair too), the more contrast, the more a face is read as feminine/attractive to (hetero) men. Since makeup provides contrast, it makes the face more feminine/fertile looking/evolutionarily attractive.

If you think about Megan Fox (full of dark/light contrast), it makes sense.

Now if only I could learn how to put on mascara without blinding myself.

Benetint is the best blush ever. I don't go anywhere without makeup but it's very natural. Light foundation, blush, undereye brightened, mascara and eyebrows filled in. I don't like onbvioys makeup.
