Congrats on her surgery & I hope it works. If the eyelid sewing was during surgery, I guess they couldn't use tape in the area because they were working there?

Wishing your niece a smooth recovery! They don't normally sew the eyes shut, was it done transpalpebral? They go in through the eyelid sometimes if the forehead is very large.
Would you happen to know how long it takes for the result? I assumed it was pretty much immediate but I read somewhere that it may take up to 6 months for full result. I wonder if it's because the swelling can compress the nerves left in tact. It seems to make sense since Ive had no pain at all in the temples where the nerve was removed but 2 bad migraines in the forehead where just the muscle is removed. it's been a huge relief so far but if I can still hope for near complete cessation it would be great.
I hope this surgery gets better recognition from insurance companies, neurologists and plastic surgeons. It's really a miracle that can help so many.

Thanks for the update, DCNGA. I knew surgery was scheduled for this week and she's been on my mind. I was anxious to sign on and see how the surgery went and how she's doing. I agree with the others, in that the long-term results will be well worth the short-term pain.
I saw your post about the epilepsy and sinus problems, and have to wonder if either of those issues contributed to sewing her eyes shut during surgery. Just a guess thrown out there. The only time I've known of eyes being sewn shut during surgery was for a patient with Acquired Brain Injury, and even for that one I don't know the reason for it.
Best wishes to her. I hope the pain subsides quickly and the results are nothing short of life-changing in all the right ways!

Thanks, everyone. I have no idea why they sewed her eyelids shut. My brother threw that in as an after thought right before he hung up yesterday. As for how quickly it works, I think it's supposed to be soon or immediate. I do know he told my brother that she may have a migraine for a few days afterwards until all of the swelling subsides and because of the sinus/turbinate surgery. Dr. G says he won't say that she won't have migraines ever again but they will be greatly reduced (anything less than one a day will be an improvement she would welcome) and maybe go away completely if really lucky. We'll keep our fingers crossed and hope for the best. Improvement would be wonderful, elimination a miracle. Thanks again, all.

Did they stitch them together, not sure I understand, why?, may be they did not want the light to get in yet?? why not put a bandage on DCNGA wrote:Thanks. Talked to my brother this afternoon to check on her and she's still in pain. Drains don't come out until Monday (ugh). But, he told me that they sewed her eyelids shut during the surgery. WTH? Why would they do that? I'm very curious why they would need to do that.....

They didn't leave them sewn together after surgery. Don't have a clue why they did it. Very odd thing to do. She does have epilepsy so maybe like Gracey said that is why they did it. Just not sure.

Glad she seems to be recovering well! Poor thing, I really hope this surgery alleviates her pain.

Happy to say my niece has not had a true migraine since the surgery 8 days ago. She's still in pain, of course, and healing but she even went out to Target yesterday! This may sound simple but it's a huge accomplishment!

Thank you, all. She has had one headache since my post, but that was a day that it rained (barometric pressure can cause headaches) so we are hoping that was her sinus and surgery healing that mostly caused that one. She did not have to take medicine and it passed.
