She is scheduled for July 27th. They will be staying at the condo all week. She's also having a turbinectomy and septoplasty along with the migraine surgery. She has bone spurs in her turbinates which he thinks has led to quite a few problems, on top of the migraines. I'm a little concerned about 'empty nose' syndrome and hoping he's expert enough that she won't be dealing with that afterwards. He had them file insurance on the septoplasty and turbinectomy since that was being done for medical reasons, but insurance did not approve it since it's in conjunction with the migraine surgery (regarded as experimental by the insurance company). But, at least she's having the surgery and hopefully her life will change for the better.

Hope this works out for your niece! I had this done just recently, the recovery is the worst of any surgery I've had but it's more uncomfertable than painful. I used to have 2-3 migraines a week and so far it's been 1 in 12 days so it seems to be working.

Hi, Anna. Thank you. Did you have your surgery with Dr. G? When you say it was the worst/most uncomfortable, what do you mean exactly? My niece is scared to death, but her migraines are incapacitating with one EVERY DAY!

Yes I had it with Dr G. For the first week or so it hurt to open my mouth more than just a little or chew so I cut my food up into little pieces. I'd get random pain in my head and also occasional nausea. The pressure from the swelling is uncomfortable and lasts over a month from what one of the ladies in the waiting room told me. It still hurts if I smile more than just a little since it pulls on where the fascia is anchored to the skull. You can't shower for the first 8-9 days because of the tape on the nose but you have to put polyspporin on the incisions so you end up with a goopy mess in your hair. I'm normally back to my usual routine 2nd day after surgery but it was about 5 this time. Its also been the longest until I look presentable.
I don't want to scare you niece. It's much more uncomfortable than painful and she can definitely get through it. I think it's just that my other surgeries were easier than normal recovery so I wasn't quite expecting this.

Thank you. Doubt I will be telling her much beforehand as she's so afraid as it is. Did you have something done to your nose too, as she is having?

My niece is scared to death, but her migraines are incapacitating with one EVERY DAY! Well, I can relate to this, as I've had migraines since I was a child and there have been many times couldn't remember the last time I hadn't had one. The life of a frequent migraine sufferer is typically defined by them. My heart and prayers truly go out to her that this will change her life for the better! I wish her the best of outcomes!

Thanks, Gracey. Sorry you've had to suffer these horrid things too. My niece was diagnosed with epilepsy when she was about 10. Her life spiraled downwards after that. Medications for the epilepsy caused her to gain a great deal of weight, her lower back degenerated from extra weight and migraines developed (often does if you have epilepsy). Then the sinus problems started shortly after migraines. She's been a virtual recluse with none of the life activities that your typical 20-something gets to do. Miss J, I won't be there for her surgery by my brother or SIL will be calling me afterwards. They really liked Dr. G when they met him and said how compassionate he and the doc (neurologist) at the Cleveland Clinic were. Just hope it helps her. This was my idea, so I hope I did not steer them wrong.

I hope your niece has as smooth a recovery as possible. Maybe she can use painkillers and/or ice to diminish the discomfort? And even a tough recovery has to be better than a lifetime of daily migraines. Ye gads, I can not imagine how tough she must already be having lived with them. GOOD LUCK to her! I Bug U

I hope her surgery goes well! In my experience anyway (different chronic pain disorder, but pain nonetheless), the short term pain and discomfort of surgery is usually less than the daily pain caused by chronic pain disorders and it responds better to pain killers. Surgery and recovery sucks, no question, but it has to be better than living with severe migraines on a daily basis as she has been.

I wish her all the best, DC. I agree with Barbiegirl. The long term gain will be well worth the short term pain and discomfort. As long as her pain is well managed, and I am sure it will be, she should be OK.

Thank you, ladies. She will be happy for the relief even if it is rough in the beginning.

She had surgery yesterday morning. As of yesterday afternoon, still in/out of grogginess. No nausea! In pain, though. She sees Dr. G today to get out the drains if all is well. They will be at his condo through the week-end. They wanted to stay close, just in case. Will update later.

Thanks. Talked to my brother this afternoon to check on her and she's still in pain. Drains don't come out until Monday (ugh). But, he told me that they sewed her eyelids shut during the surgery. WTH? Why would they do that? I'm very curious why they would need to do that.....

Maybe to keep surgical instruments from hitting the eyes? I know they can sew them up after a surgery to push back the swelling that might affect the eye area. Something like that.
