This seems like one of those things I would learn accidentally, but writer Nonna Joann Bruso decided to find out on purpose. The results? Not as disgusting as you might think, which itself is sort of disgusting. She wrote: “It smelled delicious for a few days. I’d get a whiff of those yummy French fries every time I walked into my office. After a week or so, you could hardly smell it. My husband worried that when the food began to decompose, there would be a terrible odor in our home. He also worried the food would attract ants and mice. He questioned my sanity. NOPE, no worries at all. My Happy Meal is one year old today and it looks pretty good. It NEVER smelled bad. The food did NOT decompose. It did NOT get moldy, at all.
The big question is...how did the bun not get ultra moldy after a year on the self? I remember once I put a loaf of bread in the refrigerator way in the back and forgot about it for 3 months.....after 3 months it was almost completely green.

It is all the preservatives and chemicals they pump into their "food". It is actually quite a common phenomenon in most processed foods. It is definitely NOT something you want to eat if you care about your health or looking your best, because consuming preservatives does the exact opposite of preserving us.

Since the bun was not in plastic closed up tightly, but a paper bag that could probably 'breathe' some, moisture did not accumulate and cause it to mold like bread in a plastic bag molds. If you take a hamburger bun out and sit it on a shelf for a year, in a relatively humidity free (more arid) environment, it will merely get hard and not mold. Preservatives didn't hurt the longevity either.

Adelle D avis in her classic book; 'Let's eat right' discussed this sort of thing. White flour lasts longer because they remove the nutrients from it so not much can survive on it at all. In Morgan Spurlock's 2004 documentary, "Supersize Me", he compared the french fries from MickyD to those from other chains. Those dang McMatchsticks lasted MONTHS looking fresh out of the deep-fry. You've gotta think there must be a ton of chemical preservatives in that food to last so long. Now imagine how your body can process that junk, retrieve any kind of nutritional value and excrete the rest. Come to think of it, if I smashed up a bowl of McD's french fries and used them as a facial mask, would I look just as preserved over time? That's the million dollar question. Urp!

I don't think you would! I think it would have the opposite effect.
