What we need to do is perhaps to go into the OLD celeb posts (like posts over 6 months old) and DETATCH some of the photos there. Celeb section gets the most photos and the topic kind of 'fizzles out' after a while--certainly after 6 months. So if you have some time, feel free to DETACH photos from celeb board that are over 6 months old--you know, strings where no one has responded in the last 6 months. Some of the photos on there are not technically "attached". That is to say, some of them are stored on a remote host. Basically, if when you hit 'edit' on someone's post and you see something that has the address of the photo surrounded in brackets, it means the photo is stored on a remote host and that host may be slow to load too if the host has a lot of ads on it.

Just brain storming here but I have notices something like DCNGA is saying about the photo storage sites. Like when ever I hit something where the photos is on image shack, that site is very slow. So, if someone has an avatar ('siggy photo) that is directly linked there, it could make board run slow (maybe??). Yatterman had his siggy photo linked from there and I changed the address to here. But anything that could possibly help, I'm willing to try.

I'm not sure. The thread I was on had Nancy and Y on it and it said image shack loading, so his was probably the one doing it in that thread. You might check Nancy's too, just in case.

I'm thinking ANY photos linked to Photobucket or Image Shack are going to slow things down. But, again, this is just a theory and may have very little basis.

LARGE pics posted here do slow things down. I res all of mine down to poor quality so they won't be slow to load. Like the latest ones of my grandson are pretty bad quality because I res'ed 'em down so much.

I'm getting ready to post two of my peel that are small too, so they will load quickly.

All of this is more or less brain-storming like Miss J mentioned, but worth trying. Looking at the server logs is probably the most reliable way to see what's going on, if errors are being thrown. That cannot be done via the admin tool on the forum, but through where the server/website is hosted (ISP).

It's not the posts themselves that would need to be deleted. It would most likely be the photos in them; as to detach attachments and to delete photos stored on a remote site.

For example, an ATTACHED photo will have NO CODE in the post if you hit 'edit' on that person's post and a photo stored on a remote host will have brackets surrounding the jpg address. The attached photo will say on the screen: '_____attached the following", in which case, you hit the attach button to detatch the photo. In the case of a photo stored at a remote host, hitting the 'edit' button of the post will allow you to delete the address of the photo or you could just delete the brackets that turn the addres of the photo into a photo one can see on the board.

I guess in the case of a photo stored on a remote host, just the brackets surrounding it could be removed. In that way, people could still click on the photo.

phpBB allows you to choose a 'pruning' date. I can change it from 60 days to whatever I want. YAF must be different.

If you want, while I'm recuperating I could delete old posts in the celeb board (say from over a year ago) but that does reduce everyone's points by deleting, I think. Is there a way to delete posts without causing a points reduction? It would be too time consuming to go into individual posts to remove the pics. But, that might be the only option.....ugh...

Thanks for your brain storming here. I'll check Nancy's avatar too. I shall look in the admin section where it has 'attachment' log. There is a part that gives the size of the attachment but I don't understand what the numbers translate to. I'll copy and paste it a bit later after I check on more avatars.

OK, so far, I got Nancy's and Y's avatars which were on photobucket and imageshack respectively. Any more folks with remote avatars?

I only started paying attention this afternoon on the one celebrity thread about the football player. Not many folks use avatars, really, just a handful of us. I think all of us store our images here, instead of off site. I'll start paying more attention when I open a thread and it's slow to see what's loading and from where.

Thanks for paying attention and tell me if my changing the address of the avatars did anything.

It could also have something to do with the ERROR message I get at the bottom of the page (admin can see it but posters don't). Tech teddy disabled the e-mail option to TEST that theory. As I write, it's going faster but it's like as soon as I say that it goes slow again.

It has been faster again tonight. But, you're right, it could get slow at a moment's notice. Time will tell. It was slow after he disabled the email option, so I don't think that is the problem, honestly.

Well, I had no idea about the avatar thing. I thought because they were small, they would not do much.

But you are saying that avatars ('siggies) hosted on photobucket or image shack (which are slow)contributes to the site acting slow when the people with the avatars are posting.

It's a guess, Miss J, and may have nothing to do with what's going on here. Avatars hosted on this site should not cause any problems. But, those hosted on a site that is slow to load a page could theoretically slow down loading a thread that has an avatar hosted on one of the slow loading sites.

Curiosity just posted a pic hosted at Image Shack and it's fast as lightening to load. No rhyme or reason, it's all process of elimination.

Server logs would be more telling than anything.

I don't know what a 'server log' is. there is an event log in the admin section of this board but I have no clue as to how to use the info it gives.

Here is Event Log (some of it). Before the name of EACH guest, under "Type" was a symbol of a RED x which means "error". Any idea what that is saying?

That was a good place to look, but does not really tell me much. I'm not very familiar with YAF.

The event/error logs on the server where the forum is installed (at the ISP) is more likely going to have any application errors showing, if any exist. I don't know what the event log on the YAF product means, to be honest.

Again, these are all guesses and only what I would do if I were trouble shooting this kind of thing at work (back when I did that). I would look at the server logs, event logs (error logs) to see if there were any significant errors thrown around the time the forum was getting slow. There may or may not be, as in one may have nothing to do with the other or there may be no events/errors that relate to the slowness.

In IT you start with the obvious, and check one thing at a time. You eliminate one problem at a time because if you do many different things at once and it resolves, you won't know what one thing you did ending up fixing it. That's why TT tried disabling email as a starting place to see if that worked. I'm guessing he will move onto the next thing to try, if the board is still slow. It's a progressive thing of eliminating one thing at a time to see if the problem resolves.

It is fast this morning. If it slows down, I'll post the time when it gets slow and maybe that will help. Perhaps it is fixed now and won't be slow any longer.

Hi Miss J,

Just thought I'd also mention here that PMs have been arriving in a delayed manner. I only just received one that was sent 2 days ago. Not that the PMs are urgent, just thought you might like to know.

It went slow for me today too. I just called Tech Teddy. For us to find out why that happens and to try to fix, he said I would have to hire the soft ware developers of this board which is kind of pricey for me to do.

I'm going to disable the new sign up option for a while and see IF that has any effect.

Tech Teddy is HERE with me NOW. Here are his questions:

1: What kind of computer are you using?
2: What browser and version number (IE 7? FireFox 3.5? etc.?)
3: What error message do you get when it stops you from logging in?

As for me, I was having problems a week or so ago, but it's been smooth sailing for me for the last week--very speedy!

If it matters, I have a Dell Laptop (Vostro) and I use IE7. I have a broadband connection with a cable modem (Comcast). When I have had issues logging in, it just keeps slinging me back to the log in page and does nothing. But, I'm not having that issue these days.
