This is a very, very long post. The gist of it that some docs are pissed at how they are being treated by Lumenis (they make lasers). The thread goes back to 2008, but there have been recent posts. Subsequent to this, the fellow who started this post ended up totally unahppy with how things turned out and started another string bashing Lumenis again.

Anyhooo, this is a must read if you've ever considered having any type of laser work as it is quite enlightening as to what training docs DO NOT get for these things and how easily you could end up scarred for life...just sayin'.....

Ya, I see it's pretty clear that the company just sells them and is not held accountable if they damage, nor do they do much back up after selling. But I knew that.

Can hardly walk. Need hip replacement.

As incredible as this is, it's even MORE amazing that the posts are about 98% from the DOCTORS who administer the Lumenis laser treatments. Jaysus. And to think that behind every dissatisfied doctor are probably a dozen miserable, scarred patients .. it's beyond belief that the officers at Lumenis refuse to deal with these legitimate gripes in a positive, intelligent manner.

Oy. I never thought I'd say this, but I'm glad I had MixTo and NOT Lumenis. "Glad" being a relative term, that is. I'm still bright red with burned-looking skin under my eyes.

Seems like people are far to litigious these days BUT if ever there was a need for a class action law suit against a money grubbing company this would qualify. Maybe the docs and the injured patients could join together.

The docs may be able to band together for a CA but the patients can't. It's an "FDA approved" device. Courts ruled a couple of years back that you cannot sue the makers of FDA approved medical device unless there was 'proof' of intent to deceive and/or that the manufacturers purposely produced a machine that they knew was faulty or dangerous. Good luck with that when there would have to be verifiable proof and expert witnesses against the device maker...pretty much the same when a patient tries to sue a doctor for malpractice. Have to have 1-2 expert witnesses to say there was gross negligence or 'below the standard of care' given to a patient. Bug is one of the few I've heard of who qualifies for below the standard of care standard.

I have a consult for IPL or fraxel next week. I am definitely a little scared after reading this and all the other information DCGNA has provided.

This reminds me, I saw something on the acne board about someone who noticed a dent after laser. I see stuff like this every now and then.. DCNGA, do you want links to this sort of thing? I always feel like I should tell you about them.

It seems to me, without knowing a whole lot, that SOME people with a certain kind of skin / fat / underlying dermis have an awful time with laser treatments. But it's not clear what type of skin that is right now. I think you said this before, too.

Sure, I usually see them as I scan those board but I do miss a few. Please pass it along if you don't mind. Rosacea boards are full of those types of posts but they are not a friendly bunch on those forums when you go telling them that what they hope will cure their disease could possibly make it worse. One lady on one of those forums had been having IPL for YEARS for rosacea and then the damage suddenly started for her. It wrecked her face completely. She was devastated as she was a real believer in IPL for rosacea. She has disappeared off the rosacea forum and not sure if she will ever reappear. I just hope she is okay.

Thank you.

This topic isn't really fleshed out in this particular thread though. They say a lot of stuff about dermarolling there, but that just looks dangerous to me.

Here's another one about hypopigmentation http://www.acne.org/messageboard/Hypopigmentation-t277079.html

I had a micro laser peel and profractional laser combo on Thursday. Recovery is worse than I expected. Oww :(

I also have a sore thoat and caughing which seems odd. The cold air they were using made it hard to breathe and I kind of felt like I was chocking which i suspect is what's causing it. The dr said to speak up if I didn't like it which I should have done.

Information that may help others who might have laser done...

If your pain level during the procedure is above a 3-4 (without pre-medication), MAKE THE DOCTOR STOP. This should be your cue that deeper damage is happening than should be. Also, think hard before you allow yourself to be numbed of all pain because pain is the body's way of signaling 'too much', especially when it comes to lasers.

Just an FYI (this info came from someone in the medical profession performing laser procedures, btw).

Thanks, Gracey.

I should clarify that I am of course not speaking of ablative lasers or even Fraxel. I'm mostly talking about IPL and V-Beam.

Yup, DC, I realize you're speaking mostly about IPL and V-Beam, but I really think it's great advice about lasers in general. So many people go into the procedures either uninformed, or well informed but too trusting...so advice like this is a great reminder to all.
