Any powder in the right shade works, although I can see how the keratin fiber cosmetics would help as well.

Yes, I tried eyeshadow once after seeing Joan Rivers advertise hers. The idea is to create a shadow that your hair would make and not see the pink scalp....Just make sure it doesn't have an orange tint to the brown shadow, unless you have red hair...
I started to get hers but glad I didn't since mine is growing back in. Hers is around 29.00 but looks like it works. Don't know if there is one for less or not out there.

dermmatch works incredibly well as long as you have some remaining hair in the area of application. Try applying it without water first. You need only a very small amount to get a good cosmetic result. Regarding the microfibers, such as toppik, I found they don't work as well, and a daily application is much more expensive than dermmatch. Also your pillow will be covered with the stuff. http://www.dermmatch.com/

I ordered Joan Rivers....Good Hair Day product, though I do not have thinning hair. I bought it to hide the gray roots coming in, when I don't have time and or money to go to the hairdresser for a color touch up. It does seem to work! But, I think I would only feel comfortable with it at night.......the light of day, and you would have to have a really good match to your own color, IMO, or you would be able to see the color of the powder is not the same as your hair.
Lights at night outside, or in a club, or out to dinner would be fine, and it does definitely hide the gray roots! I don't think it is something I will use regularly, but definitely good in an emergency, therefore, handy to have!

Nim, I ordered the one for new hair growth too, but it hasn't arrived. I just wanted to hide the gray coming in so I got a brown (the color my new growth would be if I didn't have gray) Seeing brown roots with blonde hair is pretty common, even among celebrities and will give a little dimension. (I hope) I'm looking for something to give myself brown low lights.
