I'm also deficient in D. My doctor said that he started testing people for it a few years ago, and he found out that 70 % of his patients were deficient.

One of my coworkers actually has a special lamp that shines towards his keyboard so that his hands will absorb Vitamin D.

My doctor also told me that Vitamin D is in sunlight and can be absorbed through the skin. But that doesn't help those of us who slather ourselves in a ton of sunblock every day.

I'm sceptical about the current hysteria about vitamin D levels. I'm a fair-skinned brit raised under fog and cloud and it seems extremely unlikely that my body isn't designed to make do with very little sunlight. I have fallen victim to taking 4000 IU a day for months and ended up in the middle of the current desirable range--and felt most unwell for my trouble. It makes sense for darker skinned people living in northern climates to have to supplement, but for people like me living further south than where they were 'designed' for, my gut tells me I have to have adequate stores. We'll see if the current guidelines get upturned,or at least refined in a few years.
