sam,
I would suggest branching out to doing BOTOX treatments. Background in neurology would be very applicable to giving people botox shots and for cosmetic reasons.

Good thought Miss J. I trained in botox as a fellow for dystonia, blephrospasm, etc. I used to do it but it became more of a hassle than it was worth and surprisingly not a great money maker unless you are doing it alot.
I know I'm an incessant whiner but in reality I am trained to do alot of proceedures that would be more lucrative than seeing patients. It is my decision to do clinical medicine instead of proceedures so I really need get over myself.

Sam,
I think you would be a GREAT botox injector. I have not noticed any 'whining' on your part. Only great commentary.

I'm afraid of same too. However, a doctor who takes Medicare can be one who cares about patients given the profit incentive is not that high for them.

The US medical system and proposed "improvements" are terrible. Even though the Canadian health care system is far from perfect, I am grateful I do not live in the US as I would probably not receive the care I need for my multiple health conditions. Is there anything similar to Fair Pharmacare in the US? It is a government sponsored program for those who cannot afford their medication where they only pay a percentage or nothing after a low deductable. Some pharmaceutical companies also will give free medications to those who need them and can't afford them, although many people don't know about this. It is probably one of the few admirable things big pharma does for people.

Sam, I wish my family doctor was as thorough, caring and genuine as you are! Doctors really don't seem to care much about patients at all anymore beyond billable services. It is even getting bad with naturopathic doctors (ND's). One of the doctors who works in the same clinic my ND (who is great) is an absolute abomination. She over-prescribes, orders very expensive tests that don't really benefit the patient, is sickeningly fake and is incredibly condecending to her colleagues. I had the misfortune of seeing her once while my doctor was away. In the short time I saw her (about 15 minutes) she wanted me to do about $2000 worth of tests I didn't need and recommended about $600 worth of supplements I didn't need. When my doctor came back and I told him what happened, he was appalled.

You are so not whiny, Sam. You are quite the opposite, honest and genuine.

Barbie my 29 year old niece tried to get her epilepsy meds through one of the pharma company's programs, but because she lived with her mom, and her mom makes more than $30K a year, they didn't qualify. They were not considered needy enough. My niece has not been able to work for years, lives at home with her mother. So my ex-SILs income is all they have, other than what my brother does for her/them. So much for those helpful programs.

DCNGA has left the board and is no longer taking PMs.

Some doctors take too much 'license with their license'.

I'm so sorry your niece was declined for helps getting the drugs she needs. She has been through so much already and s single income doesn't go far. Not all pharmaceutical companies do this, and some don't accept many people. Could she get her medicine for free through her family doctor if they keep giving her lots of samples? It would depend on how generous the pharma reps are with giving away their free samples, but if the doctor could stock up on them it might help relieve the financial pressure a bit.

Isn't that the truth.
