Yes they are still being placed. There was a new cheaper brand put out and they all are failing. Hardly any docs used them ,thank goodness, as they all have to be replaced. There are good metal ones still available though.I have ceramic replacements but only because I have an allergy to the nickel in the metal ones

The bar tender at one of the watering holes here REFUSED to serve me a second glass of wine. Like I only had ONE and was not drunk or anything. Shit. It was because I looked 'tipsy' when entering the bar. Well YA, I look tipsy because I'm STRUGGLING to walk and can't do that without a weird limp. I called in the manager and explained that I came down with serious arthritis and need a hip replacement and my looking 'tipsy' has NOTHING to do with my having had 'too many' somewhere else. It's getting so bad that the bar tender is afraid of being sued or something if I fall out of there after just one drink or something.

Miss J what is stopping you from getting this operation? Cost? Fear? Not knowing enough about it? Low chance of success?
I hate knowing that you are struggling with something so physical. Let me know if there is anything you need that we can help with. As I said before, I know the surgeon here who is in charge of a hospital wing that does hip replacements. He is a really good person too and I can ask him who he knows that is good near you. Plus I can ask him specific questions if you want a straight answer. His whole family are surgeons, including leading heart surgeon in charge of hospital too.

I guess all of the above. For one, I'd like to get a definitive reading of those X rays. Got an ER doc telling me I only had "mild" arthritis and a hip preservation guy telling me it's enough (not mild) to get a hip replacement. Hip preservation guy even told me I did not look to be a candidate for Birmigham hip resurfacing even if Dr. Smet (expert in Belgium did it). Dr. Smet told me I was candidate (but that is about 25 grand self pay for him) but was really cursory about X ray findings. Like I would like to know what quality of BONE I have on the X rays. Is there osteopenina or osteoporousis there--no one tells me what they see in there. Sharon101 wrote:Miss J what is stopping you from getting this operation? Cost? Fear? Not knowing enough about it? I would take the ER docs comments with a grain of salt and defer to the experts.Did you look into the Birmingham guys in Boston whose names I gave you MissJ? I assume they would be covered by insurance

Sarah, Only total hip replacement would be covered with my insurance. I have CONFLICTING assessments on the BHR. Dr. Smet (expert in Belgium) says I am a candidate. Dr. Bose (expert in India) says I have 'hint' of osteopenia, small bones and risk early fracture. Dr.s in Boston DO NOT have enough surgeries under belt for BHR. Well you did not mention the osteopenia. That may well be an exclusion for BHR anyway. Surely the docs in Boston would have done more BHR cases than a surgeon here in Auckland New Zealand? Boston is a huge city

Thing is, even with the osteopenia, Dr. Smet in Belgium said I was a good candidate for HIM. But who knows, maybe he just wants to do the surgery and does not matter if anything happens after it. But he's the tops in that. I'll need to ask my PCP for another density bone reading. In 2009, I was normal/good for the hip joint. But she does not want to do another one. Boston is USA. So, USA is going to behind in what they are doing in Europe and UK. BHR comes from UK. So, more likely they would be doing that more in Australia and NZ than here. Sarah W wrote:

Dr Smets also operates in his clinic in Rome but he has an Italian protege who operates too-there maybe more wriggle room in italian pricing and his collegue should be a little cheaper and perhaps more amenable to bargaining subtley -perhaps contacting him personally a possibility.

I've been in touch with Smet. He said I was a candidate but was very short with the feedback. It's just that the other docs mentioned my bone quality might not be the best (small bone and possible osteopenia) for BHR yet this does not seem to phase Smet. If you are set on this solution even if you have mild osteopenia which seems doubtful after your last normal/good scan this is not a contraindication and if you had a too small socket Smet would have noticed it on your xrays as this is the sort of contraindication he would look for.Anyway question him more on this but I would think cost,follow-up appointments, recovery time would make it difficult to have the surgery away from home. But I doubt he would risk his international reputation for 25,000 bucks( he's not a cowboy PS) but ask about re-do policies and success statistics etc.I would speak to him on the phone and the Italian protege to make sure they are on the same page (prices, statistics etc) and to be sure it is actually him answering emails not some assistant-if you haven't done this already and if you have call again with your doubts about bone quality and see if his answers reassure you enough to go ahead with this or otherwise go with conventional replacement-you are wasting your life until you get this fixed so you can get out of pain and back to normal life.

Smet, over e mail gives a really short response. He conveys he's done lots of 'ladies' and no fractures, says my bone status is good enough for him to do it. It's just that it's not really 'reassuring' to me because he just gives a short sentence in the e mails. Man o man--I just wish I could get some arthroscopic surgery where they removed the large osteophyte that is causing the impingement and chewing up the labrum and to also sew back the labrum. I would wish this for you too-maybe you could send your xrays to a specialist in sports medicine and hip injuries at the Hospital for Special Surgery in NY for evaluation for arthropcopic surgery-it can be done if arthritis not too advanced.I believe Gross in South Carolina Hip Resurfacing Centre is also pretty experienced and well thought of-for possible alternative to Smets and another opinion on your cartilage and bone quality situation etc.

Thanks Maggie, I have sent the X rays to one of the docs (I think) at that hospital in NYC.
