Initially yes there were times when it felt OK but it just got worse and worse. It used to catch and I actually fell in the middle of the road due to the pain and nerve impingement - really dangerous as I could have been run over. In short I let it go on for far too long. Don't you do the same please. Learn from my mistake! I cannot remember if you had the MRI yet or not? You need that IMO for absolute diagnosis.

Sarah, When dr. Millis looked at the bone X ray, he said there was no need for an MRI as the X ray showed that the arthritis was the most likely problem. The osteophytes (bone spurs) are impinging on each other.

There is one other procedure MissJ that you could look into. It is the the Birmingham hip resurfacing procedure. Not all surgeons do it so you would need to see someone who has a lot of these procedures under their belt. Basically, instead of removing the whole head, they resurface it. It is for those fit, athletic, under 60 types of people, which is you.
I fit all the criteria but am allergic to nickel which is in the metal used for resurfacing and which is also why I have ceramic joints not metal.
But if I were you, I would ask about this

I already asked Dr. Millis about that. He's been openly critical of it in the Boston media. It's a harder op to do and docs in Boston are not that high on learning curve for that. There is a doc in Belgium who is expert and know for it, smit or smoot or something like that. But doc said, I did not look like a candidate for that. Can't see my self going to Belgium for it and it is true that it is a harder operation for them to do. I really should go onto the hip surgery boards to gain info. You know that certain doctors are good at certain procedures and they revert to their default procedures. Maybe your guy does not do it as he does not know how. My orthopod does it almost every day and he is here and he learned it in the US. Would you like me to ask him if he can recommend someone in the US? I am happy to. Why is he critical of it as it is a very good procedure? I know of a young man who has had both hips resurfaced about 4 years ago and he has had a wonderful result. www.birminghamhipresurfacing.com/

Dr. Millis does not do hip replacement surgery at all. He does hip preservation surgery. I was under the impression I had "mild arthritis" because that's what the ER doc told me which was just WRONG. But assuming I had 'mild' arthritis, I went to hip preservation doc. He is critical of it because he says its a more difficult op and many are low on the learning curve around here. So, YES, ask your doc if he knows one in Boston area that does the Birmingham. thanx sarah Sarah W wrote:You know that certain doctors are good at certain procedures and they revert to their default procedures. not sarah here, but a couple of things. first - that website that sarah posted has a zip-code based locator - so you can get a candidate list from there and then as sarah suggests, screen by experience with the procedure. the second thing - which I know you know but it's hard to remember for ourselves sometimes - doctors have their comfort zone and "default" procedures in PS and so it is with other specialties. You owe it to yourself to see another doc (or two) and assess for yourself whether resurfacing or replacement is the better option for you. I'm sorry this happened...

Robin, I plugged in the zip for Cambridge and Concord and got the names of same docs. Yet, I swear, I've seen other docs mentioned in the Boston area for the Birmingham. So, not sure if that's a site where they pay to be listed. Ya, I need to start consulting. My hip gave out today. Got to get a PCP referral for one of the docs Millis suggested. Robin wrote:

I'm so sorry this is happening, Miss J and I really want you to get the BEST procedure possible!! Make sure you'll retain full motion...I know some hip replacements limit range of motion and other surgeons are much better at that than others...OK...I need to ask my best friend about that...she was telling me about it the other day. Will ask what she's talking about and get back to you. There's a guy in Dallas, I think, who preserves range of motion. I'm sure there are others, too. Will find out what the difference is for you.

I could not walk like 4 paces today without pain. It's like I don't have enough time to search for a doc. If it's a ball and socket--new one--should not that keep the normal range of motion? Miss J, hip replacement is so advanced today compared to 10 years ago. My Mom had it done twice and she is 100% better. It is amazing. She waited a long time to do it, and after she had it done, she said that she wished she had done it sooner. They do it today in a minimally invasive way and you are up and about pretty quickly. You are in physical therapy quickly too. Luckily, you are in Boston. Lots of good surgeons there for this type of thing. I am sure the doctor that you saw will have a good referral. The good thing about what you have is that it can be fixed. MissJ wrote:I could not walk like 4 paces today without pain. It's like I don't have enough time to search for a doc. Thanks Zoey, I was taking to this guy today at dinner and he said he had one and it was great. Others have said that too. As you know, this just came on me suddenly out of the blue and I'm still in a bit of denial that I need that--until I try to walk. Referral was to doc at New England Baptist. Miss J...having referrals from someone who's had the surgery and was successful is the best way to go. I've had lots of my patients with hip replacements and they've done very well. It is so much better now. I think your downtime will be minimal and you can get your life back...swimming, etc. Sending you good thoughts to find the best surgeon up there.

Thanks Shaz, At this point, can't image how the surgery would immobilize me as much as I'm immobilized now.

No, sweetie...I think it'll hand you your life and mobiity back...that's what we're already saying is GOING TO HAPPEN FOR YOU!! Positive vibes your way! Just visualize yourself back to your old self who walked around and swam with no pain or problem. Then visualize the best surgeon to give you that. ;-)

Miss J i am not familiar with hip replacement, i think Sarah has a lot of knowledge in this matter, and her advice sounds right.
I hope that you can get back to your healthy self soon.
