So let me get this straight: If a celeb looks like hell naturally, they get posted here and torn to shreds for it. If they've had obvious and not-so-obvious PS, they get posted here and nitpicked about what when right/wrong, shamed for not being open about it, or praised/hated not merely so much about their appearance but their persona the tabloids would have us believe.

Yet, we go through great lengths to have our PS procedures in secrecy, hoping we come out looking natural and pray none are the wiser as to what we've done.

Weird. (And which is why I don't post often in this part of the forum.)

Surely this phenomenon has some kind of psychological basis. Wonder if it has a name...

might be simple herd / pack mentality - we are a pack of sorts and they are outside so easier for us to "critique" for better or worse. there has also been a general cultural shift - people have less reverence for celebrity. the mystique went with the internet. madonna could hide out and reinvent herself and we wouldall be amazed. now any false move - a dodgy outfit or an unretouched photo and her mistakes are pinged around the globe in miliseconds. we consume celebrities now rather than worship them. they are fodder for our entertainment. not nice necessarily but might never have been great to ever have had them on pedestals.

Rust1975, Welcome to the Coliseum!

We have decided *not* to feed the gladiators to the lions, here. Instead, we have STARS aplenty to toss into those grinding maws!

(And I'm not above dissin' a few myself.)

I definitely think there is a psychological thrill to tearing down an otherwise beautiful, successful individual who is probably paid far too much to spit out a line in front of a camera. Plus. We all actually know these folks, sort of.

Now I could bore you to tears telling you about the vain attempts employed by my relatives to hold OLD AGE at bay. But who'd read that shite? ;-)

Vicarious schadenfreude is what we have here, plain and simple.

Since celebrities put themselves in the public eye by choice, and most make a living off of their looks, I think people feel that it's "open season" to critique their looks. I also think people hold them to a higher standard since they are more likely than the average person to have the financial resources to access the very best. (Even so, they often get bad advice and end up with some bad results.)

I also think, that since celebs have more resources than most of us. They can pursue whatever aesthetic enhancements they choose, which most of us cannot. So what they choose to try, and the results they show, are of intense interest to those (like us) who are so inclined. Can't win? Probably so, in the long run, for everyone.

You're right, Rust, they can't win. And the whole thing is weird. Either way we pull them apart-they've either had too much surgery/botox/fillers or they need to get their asses into gear and sign up for surgery/botox/fillers.

Having said that, celebrities are kind of like living before and afters. They get photographed so often, we can really see the changes in their faces, whether the changes are brought about by aging or plastic surgery.

IMO, Celebs always WIN because they make tons of money being celebs and have a rather large fan base no matter what anyone on this really small board has to say about them. Like people can trash their looks but they are 'laughing all the way to the bank' or maybe crying all the way to the bank.

NOTICE:

I'm having COMPUTER PROBLEMS and can hardly get on the internet or get to my e-mail. It's taken me like 6 hours just today to try to post this message. So, no e-mails or PMs to me until I can remove this message. I have no idea what the problem is. It started with Google Chrome not loading any pages for me. TT helped to uninstall but ran out of time and it would not re-install. CAn't explain the computer problem other than to say I'ts hard for me to access the net or my site.

Are there really Heidi Montag fans?

I guess you could say she's winning, but at the expense of any respect and validity from many people with a brain. Winning in the financial sense isn't the be all end all.
