The hip/knee info is very helpful.

Miss J, what everyone else said about feeling better. The universe really, really needs to give you a rest. It's too much, and no one should have to deal with all of this right now. The moving was traumatic enough...your pain...I can hardly even begin to understand, and I'm so sorry.

Ya, I guess the other joints in the legs are getting out of wack because of the hip. They say to walk for the arthritis but when I do, it gets worse in the other joints. Of course, if I don't, it doesn't get any better either.

Robin wrote:

if one joint has a problem, then other parts of the body try to compensate, and that can cause additional strain.

the knees and the hip are notoriously related in this manner. the body relies on the hip for rotation.. the knee can only go forward or back. If the hip is not rotating properly, then it puts rotation strain on the knee and knee pain/problems result.

now you might also have something more systemic going on, and for that it's good you're consulting with a rheumatologist. but if it's just your knees (i.e. you don't have shoulder or elbow probs for example), it's probably that the very labored way you are walking is affecting your knees.

I'm so sorry this is happening to you and I hope you find a physician that can help you soon.

Thanks. The clincher was I was already to start taking long hikes as to chill out from all the stress from the eviction. Concord is kind of a haven for 'outdoorsy' types. But soon as I made commitment to to 'de stress' by getting more into the physical realm, this thing hit me and hasn't stopped since.

I feel you. I fell/injured myself 3x last year (so I know how you feel when you say you're walking like an old lady, afraid to slip, slide, fall, etc.) and my last injury a month ago was when I was taking a walk to rebuild some of the lost fitness.

I hope the doc gets back to you soon...like today. I wonder if good old fashioned pain pills like Vicodin* might work in the meantime? All of this is taking so long and you're in so much pain.

*It's not my fave drug but works for some things-thought you might have that or maybe some Oxy leftover from previous surgeries?

Actually, I have some old narcotic pain pills hanging around from when I USED TO get PS and never took the pain pills. I was toying with idea of taking them to get through the day. Presently, I can't get into or out of hip and knee flexion eg. can't climb a stair or get up from a chair without the impingment pain.

I swam a mile today but it took for f***ing ever. Not to mention walking/limping very slowly to get there and having to do 90 min worth of PT exercise just to walk with a limp.

Some docs actually advocate OPIATES for arthritis pain. But still afraid to take the ones I have hanging around unless I could get a script for opiates when I ran out.

Good job on the swimming! I'm finding some heat followed by gentle aerobic exercise is working better than anything the PTs ever Rx'd for me. Somehow they never put the two together in that order and I'm pretty sure they never recommended heat. My muscles probably enjoy being worked more than not, and the heat allows them to do that.

I'm all in favor of taking what you need to get through the day as long as it's temporary so I understand your reluctance to start if there's no guarantee that you'll get more in the future if you need them. I'm sure you've read all the pain meds studies where patients take their pain meds as long as they're in pain and stop when they're not. I WOULD suggest asking the new doc (when is he going to get back to you about the X-rays again? Can you call and ask if he's reviewed them yet?) but you don't want that to be the first thing he writes in your chart cuz he might interpret that as drug seeking. I've had friends who that happened to and it pretty much guaranteed them nothing stronger than Tylenol for the rest of their life.

Thing is it's a type of pain that is more likely to get worse than better and of course concerned with the addictive element of them.

I understand, I also don't like the side effects (nausea, constipation) but I've taken them in a pinch, like when I had constant headaches that weren't dx'd yet and aspirin/ibuprofen didn't touch. There's also the problem of dependence, i.e. it takes more of the drug to relieve pain over time. I've always been scared of that.

Can you call the Dr. today about the X-rays?

Diana D,
I need to let the doc call me first. They did today and I have an appointment in Feb.

Man o man--just went to the Tack store (horse supplies) and bought some joint nutrients for horses along with some DMSO. got a 30 day supply of joint supplement for horses. I figure a horse is about 1000 pounds and I'm 120. So maybe I shall take about a 1/10th or so. OK--so I DO have the HUMAN joint supplements and have been taking them for YEARS but they are not doing much good.

I was reading along about your going to the tack store for the horse supplies and thinking (Horses? She's going to try riding horses when she has so many problems w/ mobility? and then thinking...horse tranquilizers? But that could be dangerous! Wtf?) and then I got to the end of your sentence and read the part about joint nutrients. I hope they work!

Yesterday heat did not work so no possibility of walking. Oh, well, it was nice while it lasted! Back to limping over here. So annoying. I wish I knew for sure what it was. I can feel the pain in my back starting around the tip of the iliac crest and then radiating out further to the rest of the hip/back muscles in the area.

I hope yours is an early Feb. appointment...

I think my riding days are over at this point. I swam today but so SLOW as joint not 'liking' to move at all without pain. What ever I have is getting worse at an alarming rate. In May (before the eviction note),when I was getting ready (like on a health kick) for PS, I could swim 1 mile in 60 degree water (which is kind of cold) and could easily walk/hike 5 and run up and down stairs doing stuff and had a good range of motion with stretches and NOW, it's like I've aged 30 years (body wise) with rapid cascading arthritis. My appointments are on Jan 31 (2 of them) Feb 1 and 2.

Can hardly walk. Need hip replacement.

I'm so glad you have those appts. coming up, sounds like they will be intensive, which you need. Maybe he can give you some real pain pills then, maybe give Cymbalta a try.

I figured out that some of the hobbling comes from not moving yesterday b/c it was actually a sunny spring like day here and I just ACHED to get out in the sunlight (even though I generally avoid the sun I just slather on the sunblock and wear a hat) and took a very small, mincing (b/c of the limp) walk after applying heat first. The pain had spread to the sacral area and I really don't know what got into me, but...to be out in the fresh air! This morning I feel better. Hmmm.

I have my own appt. on Tues. so I'll be thinking of you, Miss J. Just a day and a half to get through!

I managed to hobble/limp to the swim pool with my walking stick. The walking stick elicits curious attention from children because they want to know why I have 'that stick'. (It's a cherry wood branch I found at Walden Pond and I rigged it with flashing red reflectors for walking at night.) But still, after swimming, it hurt. I no longer can socialize at the 'watering holes' around here because I smell like horse LINIMENT which I slather all over my hip and leg areas.

Can hardly walk. Need hip replacement.

You can't get to the Dr. fast enough today! I hope he's got some ideas on how to help you, esp. w/ the pain. It's scary how you turned into this athletic woman that you described the other day to one who needs a cane and suffers so much through each body movement. In my case, I've kind of always had the hip pain and suffered through it but everything: knees, ankles, hips got really bad with some injuries I sustained last year.

Good luck!
