I have baby fine hair which is also thin. I perm it and braid it at night for volume. I've always thought about extensions/wigs. I was surprised to find that Jennifer Aniston has been using extensions but cut her hair because the extensions were ruining her natural hair and she wanted to grow it out. It appears Madonna also has thinning hair, because without her extensions her hair looks very thin. Both of these women always had natural voluminous manes, so wondering why they even used extensions in the first place.

So basically I don't want to do extensions, at least not the type that damage hair a lot.

Have thought about a human hair wig, but as Stache pointed out in another thread, it looks like constant use of wigs can also damage ones own hair.

ALSO, I want it to look totally real.

Is such a thing possible?

I dunno, but I'd like to find out where I can go to get clip on bangs to try on...I have a very high forehead, like an 8 head. I don't want to order them online until I know that they will work w/ my sometimes curly, (depends on when I last washed it) sometimes wavy hair. Plus, there's the whole curly/wavy hair and bangs thing...straight bangs look weird, but so do curly.

I got some extensions in the 80s as an experiment and they ripped out a fairly volumous head of hair, so I stay away. My hair is pretty thick as it is right now in terms of follicles but it's baby fine so needs to be left alone. I'm considering a forehead lowering surgery and wondering what that would do b/c I've read so many stories about hair loss w/ coronal brow lifts.

I think all the major stars plus a lot of regular peeps wear extensions now...it used to be considered a bad thing for wearing a weave (and generally worn more by African American women) and now it's considered fairly normal for everyone.

(ETA)

I thought you were asking about extensions, not wigs, but yes, absolutely, you can get a great wig. Your problem will be narrowing down all of the choices. You can get good looking (and easy to take care of synthetic hair which is a lot less heavy than human hair) but if you want human hair it will cost you more, but it should be no problem to get get a quality one. Also consider hats on days you want to go w/out wigs. I hadn't heard that constant use of wigs is bad, but I don't doubt it. I've never worn them constantly but they are fun to use when your hair isn't up to snuff or you just want a new look. I'm thinking of cutting my hair really short and doing wigs/hats when I get facial surgery since my hair tangles so easily. Or maybe texturizing (mild straightener) and cutting to jaw length so I don't have to spend 10 minutes in the shower detangling it after surgery-I'll be too weak.

I wear extensions but not all the time. I get really beautiful clip ins and then wear my hair pinned up the rest of the time. Doesnt hurt my hair at all. Dont get them sewn or glued in. If you see my pic in another thread, I have them in in the pic with the green top. Just gave me a little boost.

Now I have been researching more recently silk and lace top remi wigs. I might just slick my hair back and put one of these on instead of the hair extensions because my hair thinned out more than usual this past fall. I don't think it will hurt your hair if you put on a wig cap. There are tons of tutorials and video how to's on youtube. You'd be amazed at how real it looks.

I also have a wig that I cut out 80% of it but can clip in on the top a small top piece with barrettes but my bangs and the back hair shows and is blended in. So there are many options but you have to be creative and brave the first couple of times in public.

Oh and they sell clip on bangs at sally beauty supply, saw them 2 days ago there.

Thanks for the info. I wonder if I should go to a professional for help with this since I have no experience whatsoever...

no, first try to learn on your own. your hair is like mine used to be. I can help you order the extensions. then cut them and clip them in. see if you like that before doing anything else. these won't hurt your hair. just a little hair makes a big difference. if you want to learn about lace wigs, go to youtube and see all the videos you can find. then search the sites. its amazing how real they look. I am getting a glueless lace real human hair wig. easy to put on. need to cut the lace by your face, has little baby hair and skin top, no one will know its not real. i'll try to post some links for you.

Yeah, great info...it's truly revolutionary now w/ people making their own wigs, basically. I'm sure the cost has come down, too. I'll check out Sally Beauty supply today...whatever it costs it'll be cheaper than a forehead reduction!

So I went to Sally's and they were out of my color...ordered this online as even the Sally's online site didn't have my color:

We'll see how it goes...I like the look of bangs but have never liked all the upkeep/committment they require.

My dream hair b/c it's wavy and has bangs.

You never know how those things are going to fit, though, so it's best to go to a wig shop and try them on. I'll bring a copy of this to the wig shop when it's time. Pretty good price for human hair, too, which has its merits: lasts longer than synthetics, but synthetics can look really good and are generally much lighter than human hair.

My hair looks sort of like this but salt and pepper and about 2" shorter right after I wash it but it gets wavy after a couple of days of wearing it up and has cowlicks that prevent bang formation so the first wig is pretty close to perfect for me although I'd also trim it about 2" on the bottom.

Have you done any exploring yet, Nancy?

ETA

They DO have a return policy on their wigs and base their fit on circumference of the head (not all of them do, sometimes they just come in S, M, L) so that sounds pretty cool.

I've been doing alot of research and it seems that the lace wigs with silk tops are the most natural and undetectable. Then you need to be mindful that the lace color matches your skin tone and that the knots are bleached so no one can tell. The lace should match your skin color. Anyway...been watching alot of youtube..lol.

Lace fronts sound like they would be more comfortable and less hot than regular wig tops, too. I'm waiting for my bangs to come in the mail and am itching to go try on some real wigs. It's been a long time since I revisited this area and the research is turning out to be more fun than drudgery, which is nice.

Diana, I have some great links I'll post when I have some time. I couldn't believe how real the wigs look. I do think that those with higher foreheads can wear some of them better because it won't have to go so low on the forehead...that's why I wear them set back a little and have to blend them but now want to try a "real and full" wig one day soon. I'll have to use the glueless kind as the ones with full adhesive attachment can't sit right on the hairline but a little lower and I don't think my forehead is high enough for that, I'll look like a cavewoman, lol.

D-I linked them in the top of my first linked post on this thread but you might want to look around online or see if your area has a wig shop, the ones I ordered I'm somewhat skeptical about. If I'm lucky I'll get into a real wig shop this Fri and have a look if they carry them.

I got hair extensions last October and will be replacing them in April. I will keep you posted on how my own hair looks like after this batch is taken out.
So far I am happy except that my hair is very long and it is a lot of work ! (I am lazy too).

Yeah, the one thing easy about long hair IMO is that you can just put it up when you don't want to deal with it! If mine didn't tangle, though, I'd consider it a lot easier.

Here's today's fantasy wig on that subject...the price is unusually high given that I've seen this model for $150-175 with human hair, but this is the only pic I have on hand of it now:

http://www.dhgate.com/fringe-mola-1-10pcs-100-jet-black-wig-bangs/r-ff8080812d20e366012d212d57ce4d69.html

It's not perfect, I'd trim the bangs so it just met the eyebrows and again cut the bottom 2" or more but 1)It's got bangs and 2) Doesn't tangle cuz it's straight! I think one of the reasons people like wigs/extensions so much is b/c it's not like PS where you have to wait...wait to get the $, wait to get the ideal time for recovery, wait to recover...you can have a new look in an instant and you can take it off/out if you don't like them.

Hopefully I'll get the bangs in the mail today...Amazon is soooo slow compared to other merchants.

So...bangs report.

Once again, DCNGA, I tried these:

http://www.drugstore.com/hairdo-clip-in-bang-ebony/qxp226470?catid=159263

which will work if your hair is: straight, on the silky side but it would be better to get some human hair ones (Or have them custom made) b/c they will last longer than the synthetic. They are also on the thin side but they do give a good idea of what you'd look like w/ bangs w/out cutting your hair, which many of us are trying to avoid. Bangs growing out can be such a pain, and for those like me w/ curly/wavy hair doubly annoying b/c they want to curl up, up, up in the air!

Also, make sure the bangs match your hair color...it was kind of amusing looking at these super straight jet black bangs against my wavy black salt and pepper hair. I'm coming to the conclusion that I'm either going to need to: 1) Get salt and pepper bangs, i.e. dye them myself, which is a comical idea. 2) Finally dye my hair, even though I don't want to, cuz I like the grays, there's only a smattering of them and I think they give me a certain gravitas...and I don't want to be locked into dying my hair every month. 3) Straighten my hair so that bangs can be cut out of my real hair but that's even more expensive and locked in.

Let's hope the wig shop yields promising results!

Today: the wig shop. I called them yesterday and they said they may not have exactly what I want but might be able to order them for me.

Nancy, I hope you don't feel like your thread has been hijacked, would love to hear what, if anything you've been doing and wanted to thank you for starting this thread b/c it's kickstarted me into action...I've wanted to do something w/ clip in bangs for awhile but was unsure of where to start w/ all the new hair technology. Back in the day only wigs existed and extensions were just coming out and it could be a long, expensive proposition that would, no matter what was promised, rip out your own hair. It's really nice that you can buy your hair/bangs etc. online or at Beauty Supply stores. If Vanessa hadn't mentioned Bangs at Sally Beauty supply I'd probably never have done anything.
