I has it done once years ago but got scared off as I heard horror stories about it pitting skin leaving craters ! It probably can smooth skin out nice , have to be careful though as with anything

It does but not in a significant way. There's probably no visible change after a few weeks in almost every case.
If you want to stimulate significant collagen production, you have to induce significant damage (much deeper damage), or use rx retinoids very aggressively, or both.
Microdermabrasion is just too superficial. But if you get an actual MD to do it, he or she might take it to the next level of skin and actually achieve something more lasting. You'd be out of commission for a few weeks if that happened, though--forget going to work or whatever while your epidermis regenerates.
