Is azelaic acid a prescription cream or an ingredient in some OTC skin creams?

I think Azelaic acid is wonderful for hyperpigmentation - and yes Retin A actually works well as an "opening" for other cremes to penetrate the skin - what exactly have you noticed in terms of a change in your skin textrue and tone - A much smoother skin surface with more refined pores. Skin tone is more even, less visible pigmentation. Should also add it has helped reduce redness and irritation.

Well the one I use is prescription strength. Some cosmetic skin creams may have lower concentrations, but don't know any off hand. The two main prescription versions are Azelex (Skinoren in Europe) 20% cream and Finacea 15% gel (although it looks more like a cream). Finacea is supposed to be gentler but I personally found it to be more irritating than the Azelex/Skinoren.

Yes it can tingle quite a bit after application, especially the neck for me....so hard not to scratch!

I was once told that the "gold standard" for skin care was tretinoin and Alpha/Glycolic acid; so I totally believe various types of acids enhance the effects of tretinoin. I personally do a light glycolic acid peel every other day and use Retin-A nightly.

Did you start out once a week and work your way up to evey other day? I'm using retin-a nightly and would like to enhance the results if possible.

Hi Jill, I order glycolic acid off of Ebay. It is very strong and will sting a lot. I put on for only 3 minutes, then rinse and moisturize. I use very high strength but you can get 30%, 50% or 70%. If you order from Ebay (there are various vendors) they will send instructions. Best to start off with low strength for short period of time. Best of luck!
